Silicone Rubber has two primary "claims to fame", it can be clear or translucent and it is a good high temperature material. Whenever heat is a consideration, silicone rubber is always the first thing that comes to mind. The working temperatures of silicones typically far exceeds other rubber-like materials, this make them a natural choice for ovens, sterilizers and other applications that see a lot of heat. The other main attractant for silicone rubber is that it can be formulated as a clear or translucent material. There are many cases where the elastomeric characteristics of rubber are needed, but for cosmetic reasons, a clear product is required, this is where silicone rubber does especially well. These clear formulations are also well suited for custom coloring. In addition, for some products, silicone can be run as a liquid injection system, gaining many of the advantages of injection molding on a thermoset material. Some silicone rubbers are compounded to be biologically inert and meet the requirements of USP Class VI.
